Tsunami Alerting Project

Auckland Emergency Management (AEM), part of Auckland Council, is currently undertaking work to better understand the Auckland region’s tsunami risk and help communities make decisions that protect themselves and their families in tsunami emergencies. As part of this work, AEM has recently published new evacuation maps based on new modelling of the region’s exposure to dangerous tsunami waves. The new maps are simpler and reflect the alerts and warnings the public may receive on their cell phones or through the media to make it clear where and who should evacuate in a tsunami emergency.

The new maps can be found on the Auckland Emergency Management Hazards Viewer, link below:

AEM is currently using the new maps to review the vulnerability of Auckland’s coastal communities. This piece of work will indicate which communities are most at risk from the dangers of the tsunami and why. This information will be used as part of an options assessment for Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee to consider what tsunami public warning and alerting options will be most effective in lifting the understanding of tsunami risk across the region, and ensure that people have access to the right information during tsunami emergencies.

If you have any questions regarding this project, you can contact AEM through tsunamialertingproject@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.
